Rescue dog Albie: A year later, an owner reflects on adopting his best friend

Rescue dog Albie has been with owner Peter Zheutlin and his family for a year now. And in that year, Peter, who didn't know how well he'd take to a dog, has learned a lot about himself ? he likes being licked, for one.?

The shy, tentative creature who?d been found wandering alone in central Louisiana, and who was just days away from being euthanized in a kill shelter, is now very much at home.

The dog that didn?t bark for weeks now uses his ?outdoor voice? to engage other dogs we meet on our walks. The dog who wouldn?t even venture upstairs now makes himself at home in our bed. The dog that waited for attention now comes into the office as I type, looks up expectantly with ball in mouth and, if I don?t respond immediately, begins pawing my leg to let me know it?s time for a game.

You learn a lot about a dog in a year. You also learn a lot about yourself. Here are some of the things I?ve learned.

First, my tolerance for dog hair on the carpets and sofas, and mud on the leather seats in my car, is much higher than I thought possible. I still prefer things clean and neat, but there are some things you just have to let go. When you are over the moon for your dog you can overlook a lot.

Second, my capacity for loving an animal is far greater than I knew. When I look into those deep brown pools he has for eyes, when he cocks his head to one side as if to say ?don?t go? when I leave the house, when he rolls over completely onto his back and rests his head in my lap ? one way he says ?belly rub, please? ? I?m all his.

Third, all those cutesy pictures and videos people post on Facebook and YouTube of their dogs, the ones I always thought were for people with too much free time and not enough human contact? Some of them really are worth watching. I saw one the other day of a black lab puppy who goes downstairs by sliding on his belly. Boy, was that ever worth ten seconds of my time. Just adorable.

Fourth, having a dog lick your face isn?t as gross as it sounds.

Fifth, never mind the US Postal Service: neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night, stays a dog from his appointed rounds, though they aren?t always swiftly completed and you have to go with him. There?s just no hiding from the weather when you have a dog.

Sixth, dogs, even wet dogs, smell better than I thought.

Seventh, dogs are great stress reducers. They don?t care that the car needs a new oxygen sensor, that the upstairs sink needs a $400 repair or that you have 26 errands to run in the next hour. If they have a stick or a tennis ball, life is good. A dog helps put things in perspective. I think that explains why my mother-in-law, who was in disbelief when we told her we were adopting a dog, wondering why we?d want to take on that responsibility, now asks if Albie can come with us when we visit.

Finally, I?ve learned that those lyrics from the theme song from ?Toy Story? apply in spades when it comes to a loving dog: You?ve got a friend in me. Isn?t that right, Albie?

Obama Nominates Astrophysicist to Head NSF

France Anne Cordova served as president of Purdue University from 2007 to 2012, and oversaw the creation of the Colombia?Purdue Institute for Scientific Research

Astrophysicist France Anne Cordova has been tapped to head the US National Science Foundation (NSF), which has been run by an acting director since March 2013. President Barack Obama?announced the pick on 31 July. If confirmed, Cordova would fill the gap left by Subra Suresh, who announced his resignation in February, after serving less than half of his six-year term leading the US$7 billion agency.

Cordova, who earned her doctorate from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, served as president of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, from 2007 to 2012. In 2010, she oversaw the creation of the Colombia-Purdue Institute for Scientific Research, which aims to foster scientific collaboration between the Colombia and the United States.

Earlier in her career, Cordova worked in the Earth and Space Sciences Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, and went on to lead the department of astronomy and astrophysics at Pennsylvania State University in University Park. In September 1993, Cordova was named NASA?s first female chief scientist.

?She?s a very accomplished academic researcher,? says?Umar Mohideen, chairman of the physics and astronomy department at the University of California, Riverside, where Cordova served as chancellor from 2002-2007. ?She?s managed academia, and those are qualities that would make her a good choice.?

Cordova now begins the sometimes lengthy process of winning confirmation from the ?US Senate?? normally an easy process for candidates to lead NSF. But her nomination comes at a time when Republican lawmakers in the Senate have used procedural tactics to slow consideration of Obama administration picks. EPA chief Gina McCarthy was confirmed on 18 July after a historic delay caused by political infighting, and?Obama has struggled to fill several other top science positions.

Taiwanese pet owners rush to inoculate animals as rabies strain ...

By Agence France-Presse
Wednesday, July 31, 2013 11:35 EDT

?

Pet owners in Taiwan were rushing to inoculate their animals on Wednesday after the first case of rabies in a shrew was confirmed, fuelling fears that an outbreak of the disease is spreading between species.

Health authorities on the island have been battling to contain a rabies outbreak among so-called ferret-badgers, with at least 18 cases among the weasel-like animals confirmed so far.

On Wednesday officials confirmed the disease had spread to a shrew, fuelling fears that it could mutate further to affect domestic pets ? greatly increasing the risk to humans.

In an area of Kaohsiung, the biggest city in the island?s south, more than 500 people took their pets to be vaccinated ? though only 380 doses were available, according to the Taipei-based China Times.

The newspaper also reported that a group of villagers found two masked palm civets ? small, nocturnal carnivores related to the mongoose ? and beat them to death on Tuesday.

In northern Keelung city, police said they had received nearly 100 phone calls from residents following the discovery of a dead ferret-badger.

Yen Shen-horng, a biology professor at Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung, said there was ?no need to panic? ? but added it was the first known instance of a shrew contracting rabies and indicated that the virus may have mutated.

The infected shrew was caught in a home in Taitung county on July 25.

Chang Shu-hsien, the chief for the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine, told reporters that the shrew could have been bitten by an infected ferret-badger.

Taiwan is now listed as a rabies-affected area by the Paris-headquartered World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) after the island confirmed its first outbreak since 1959 on July 17.

The Taipei city government has set up a contingent unit tasked with monitoring rabies outbreaks, with plans to purchase more than 50,000 doses of vaccines before the end of August.

Only 10 countries and regions in the world are listed as rabies-free. Some 55,000 people die of the disease worldwide every year.

Symptoms in humans include seizures, partial paralysis, fever and brain inflammation, or encephalitis.

There is no known treatment to cure rabies once the infection has taken hold.

An iPad for every La Crosse middle school student?

LA CROSSE, WI -

Students are no longer looking for the coolest trapper keeper to bring to school. They want the next generation of gadgets.

The La Crosse School District is working on getting an iPad in the hands of all middle school students.

A 7th grade teacher at Longfellow Middle School says it's the latest and greatest gadget for students, especially because it keeps everything in one place.

Students have access to assignments, lectures, and videos both in class and after they go home.

And a perk for parents is it cuts down on school supply costs. "And so the trapper keepers and all the pencils and the folders and all those calculators, all those materials parents used to have to go and buy, they no longer have to do that because it's all encased in one spot," said Longfellow teacher Jeanne Halderson.

One report says the cost of school supplies is going up nearly 7.5%.

Small community grieves loss of six in crash

Accident

Kiowa County Emergency Services Manager Chris Sorensen is interviewed during a press conference Thursday afternoon at the Eads, Colorado School. Sorensen answered questions related to the van vs. semi collision Thursday morning on Hwy 287 near Kit Carson. One adult and five children died in the accident. All of the children were students at Eads, where there are about 170 students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade. (Mary Breslin)

A crash in which a passenger van collided with the rear of an empty livestock trailer at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday on U.S. Highway 287 about two miles south of Kit Carson, has left six people dead, according to Chris Sorensen Kiowa County emergency services manager.
Sorensen said the van was carrying 12 children, ranging in age from four years to 17 years and one adult, who was driving the vehicle. The driver and five of the children suffered fatal injuries.
A total of 10 patients were transported to Keefe Memorial Hospital in Cheyenne Wells. Several patients were flown out to front range hospitals. The driver of the semi also received serious injuries and after initial treatment at Weisbrod Memorial Hospital in Eads, was transported to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs.
Sorensen said the accident occurred just north of the area where crews were working on a crack sealing project and where crews were flagging traffic. Sorensen said it is not known at this time what the speed of the van was in relation to the reduced speed limit along that section of the highway. It is also not clear at this time, he said, if the livestock trailer was completely stopped when it was hit by the passenger van.
Eads Superintendent Glenn Smith said all five of the children who died were students at Eads, crossing all grade levels. The oldest victim, aged 17, was an Eads High School student.?

The driver of the Dodge Ram was identified as 57-year-old Howard Mitchell of Kit Carson. Mitchell was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The following passengers in the van died as a result of the crash and were not wearing a seatbelt.

11-year-old Austyn Atkinson of Kit Carson

4-Year-old Tony Mitchell of Kit Carson

10-year-old Tayla Mitchell of Kit Carson

13-year-old Andrew Dawson of Kit Carson

17-year-old Jeremy Franks of Kit Carson.

The following passengers in the van sustained injuries and tehy were not wearing a seatbelt:

13-year-old Brandon Rollis of Kit Carson, who was transported to Children's Hospital in Denver

16-year-old Daniel Ortega of Kit Carson, who was trasnsported to Swedish Hospital in Denver

15-year-old Robert Miller of Kit Carson, who was transported to Swedish Hospital in Denver

18-year-old TJ Mitchell of Kit Carson, who was transported to Swedish Hospital in Denver

17-year-old Scott Fua of Kit Carson, who was transported to Swedish Hospital in Denver.

14-year-old William Palmer of Kit Carson was transported to Keefe Memorial Hospital in Cheyenne Wells with minor injuries. He was wearing his seatbelt.

3-year-old Beau McMillen of Eads was transported to Children's Hospital in Denver and had been in a child safety seat.

The driver of the 2001 Peterbilt was identified as 26-year-old Jared Kauffman of Cheyenne, Wyo. He was transported to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs and was released with minor injuries.

Smith said counselors were brought in immediately to help the children understand and work through the devastating loss of the their fellow students.
Sorensen said it was a tough day for the small community. "It will take some time for everyone to fully understand what has happened," he said, adding that the tragedy will have an impact for many years to come.
Sorensen said that the Colorado State Patrol accident reconstruction team was still working to understand how and why the accident happened. It does not appear, he said, that alcohol was involved, but there are still many questions to be answered. It is unclear at this time whether there are any eyewitnesses to the accident who might help to explain what happened.
The emergency services manager praised the first responders for their performance at the scene. "We practice for these things," he said, "and unfortunately today we had to use those skills."
This story will be updated as more details become available.

79 Yoox Leather tote bag review - Extra Petite | Petite Fashion, Style ...

**As most of you already know, the Nordies Anniversary sale has begun! My attempts to find riding boots and a not-too-trendy leather jacket early on were unsuccessful, but here are a few picks if you're shopping the sale. As always, free shipping and free returns on everything.
- More rugged/utility style trench option: Burberry Brit trench coat w/ detachable hood
- Conservative work staple: Halogen seamed pencil skirt starting in 00P and 7 color options
- Absolutely love my Stella & Dot arrow necklace that is now sold out. Similar option in gold or silver.
- Basic bras starting in a harder-to-find 30 band size. I have not tried these, but they came recommended by reader Alannah:?"I gotta shout from the rooftops about Nordstrom's new BP Undercover juniors lingerie line. All bra styles come in a 30D and other 30 sizes, and the quality is FAB."**

On to today's review...?after a slow search for a light-colored work bag, I?m happy to have found a winner (an affordable one, to boot). I first stumbled across this purse on Yoox?while searching for a ?similar? recommendation for my cobalt blue satchel. Their huge selection of genuine leather bags and small-sized shoes on sale is almost overwhelming, so it took me a while to browse before placing an order.
prada bag for less3

For me, shopping for work bags has always been a struggle between finding something that could fit a large laptop (the bane of my daily commute), yet doesn?t overwhelm my 5 feet tall frame in size or weight.?This bag met all of my needs at a very fair price for genuine leather.?

I tend to gravitate towards the same few styles, and didn't realize how similar the general look of this bag was was to my Prada tote.?The first day I had it sitting on my desk at work, conversation from passerby traffic went something like this:

?- #1, very keen male boss (whom I go shopping with): ?Ooo, a knockoff of your camel bag!?

?- #2, semi-keen female colleague: ?Is that a new Prada? Oh wait?it looks similar, but cheaper no offense.?

?- #3, female colleague: ?Wow, you got the same bag in a different color??

Parentesi bag review2
I won't say the bag is a dupe given noticeable differences in quality, however it is a similar style for less. Continue reading for my review...

Parentesi bag review4
Ways to wear it:?1) Over the shoulder (short 6" handle drop, so this won't work for everyone), 2) hand-held, 3) on the crook of the elbow, 4) cross-body, or 5) slung on the shoulder. The strap is unfortunately not adjustable, and is too long for me to wear it the last way as-is.
Parentesi bag review3
Size:?I now have a smaller laptop?(12" x 9")?at work?and wanted a bag that could contain that, plus a wallet, shoes, makeup pouch, and snacks without any excess bulk.?This bag measures 13" wide x 10" high x 5.5" deep (1" taller and wider than Prada BN2274). Handle drop is 6" and shoulder strap is 41" long. It fits all of the aforementioned items, and I feel still looks acceptable against my frame. The leather is thinner and more pliable than the Prada's, which allows the bag to hold more stuff, more easily.

Parentesi bag review
Material: I wanted?something semi-stain, water, and scuff resistant, but with more structure than my usual Longchamp tote. Since I haul so much on a daily basis, the bag needs to be lightweight on its own (I?ve tried on so many empty bags that felt like bricks!). I was open to treated leather, coated canvas, or even nylon in a more structured frame.
prada bag for less2
Th material of this bag is pebbled, pliable coated leather. The website lists this as real leather, but unfortunately I could find no other details on the material or how it was treated. The color in-person is ivory with grey-ish tints in the pebbling (not stark white) and is very easy to pair. I?also use a base shaper for this bag, since the softer leather will probably sag with more weight.
Prada bag for less
Quality: I think the quality is very fair for the price, and in my opinion comparable to mid-tier bag brands like Michael Kors. One thing that cheapens the look of this bag a little is the rippling of the leather when there are weighty things inside (you can see this in the above photos where I am carrying it). This happens with the Prada tote too, but less so due to the stiffer and thicker saffiano leather.

Since I had the Prada on hand for comparison, I noticed other quality differences include the lack of finished/waxed edges, the lower-quality hardware, the lack of side clips for the shoulder strap (a biggie - they have to clip to the handle hardware instead), and the un-adjustability of the strap. I?m thinking of taking the strap to a cobbler to shorten ? any DIY ideas are appreciated!
Parentesi bag review1
Customer Service:?This company is based in Italy but has a distribution warehouse in NJ. Shipping is free for orders $195+, and returns (need to be made within 20 days of delivery) using their UPS label are a flat $6. My packages arrived quickly - within two business days each time. A few days after placing an order, I saw that the price of one of my items went down. I contacted Customer Service, and they responded within 1 day with a price adjustment.

All in all, I recommend this bag as a basic, everyday satchel, and am tempted to also pick up the bright blue one (my current one doesn't fit a laptop). I'm holding off on the duplicate purchase to see how this one holds up over time. I also ordered several pairs of leather shoes from Yoox (keepers were these flat sandals?and these ankle-strap sandals), and was very pleased with the quality. Will be doing a review shortly!

New Case of H7N9 Bird Flu Confirmed in China

???? ??? ????? ????????
by Naharnet Newsdesk 20 July 2013, 16:46 W460

A 61-year-old woman from northern China was confirmed Saturday as having contracted the deadly H7N9 bird flu virus, state media reported.

The woman, from the city of Langfang in Hebei province, developed a cough and fever on July 10 and four days later was given a diagnosis of severe pneumonia, the official Xinhua news agency reported, citing a Beijing municipal health bureau statement.

The woman is receiving emergency treatment in a Beijing hospital, Xinhua said, citing the statement as saying she had frequently purchased vegetables at a local market where live poultry is also on sale.

So far, nine of the woman's family members who have had close contact with her have not exhibited flu symptoms, the report said.

The first human cases of the H7N9 virus were reported in late March and it had infected 132 people in mainland China, killing 43, by the end of June, according to the latest available official figures.

While new case numbers have dropped off recently, experts remain on guard for fear the virus could mutate into a form easily transmissible between humans, with the potential to trigger a pandemic.

Official media reported Friday that a Chinese woman who spent five weeks in intensive care with H7N9 bird flu had given birth to a girl in what was described as a "miracle" first.

Adelaide`s Most Secretive Chinese Massage?

Right next to Coles in Centro Shopping Centre, Arndale, is "Magic Hands" Chinese massage.

Our reporter visited and the young Chinese male manager, aged around 30, confirmed that business was slow in spite of being right next door to busy Coles and that he had five workers there offering massage.

When offered some free coverage, he declined, stating that he does not want his business to be mentioned on the Internet.

Intrigued as to why any business requiring more customers would wish NOT to be mentioned on the Internet, especially on a news network, he was asked for his reasons but refused to offer any.

When pressed further for an explanation as our reporter found it intriguing that free web coverage would be turned down by any business requiring more customers, the manager told him "I want this business to be private, by word of mouth only, I don't want it on the Internet".

So we throw this out there to our readers, can you think of any reason why the Magic Hands Chinese Massage wants to be secretive while located next to Coles?

Our own team can only think of a few: but each do not seem probable to us:

* Illegal workers: But right next to Coles?

* A front business: the massage business being a cover business for something illegal? If so, how would that work?

* Fear of the Internet, or fear of online feedback? But the business has a Facebook page, albeit with only 3 (yes three) fans, and is also listed on Centro's Arndale web site.

* Disbelief that the coverage would be free? But why disbelieve if you don't have to pay anything.

In any case, since the business is already on the Internet, even if the Facebook page has had only 47 visits ever and has 3 likes, and also has a mention on the Centro's web site, so the manager appears to be ignorant of this at best, or a liar at worst.

The Centro's entry says: "Relax and enjoy a massage at Magic Hands Chinese Massage, health fund rebates are available for remedial massage - ask in store for details. Phone: 0401 033 083"

White House journalist Helen Thomas remembered as a trailblazer

Alex Wong / Getty Images file

Veteran reporter Helen Thomas (C) asks a question to U.S. President Barack Obama during a news conference at the East Room of the White House May 27, 2010 in Washington, DC. Thomas passed away Saturday at age 92.

By Andrew Rafferty, Staff Writer, NBC News

As news spread of Helen Thomas? death Saturday, journalists and admirers paid homage to the trailblazing reporter who was a fixture at White House daily briefings for decades.

Female journalists took to Twitter to thank the woman who many said helped shatter the perception that political journalism was a profession only suited for bourbon-quaffing men.

?Helen Thomas made it possible for all of us who followed: woman pioneer journalist broke barriers died today,? tweeted NBC News? Andrea Mitchell.

?Any woman who has had the privilege of sitting in the front row of the White House briefing room owes huge debt of gratitude to Helen Thomas,? tweeted Julie Pace, White House correspondent for the Associated Press.

?RIP Helen Thomas - died this morning at 92. Amazing trail blazer, fearless journalist and friend & mentor to so many women reporter,? Judy Woodruff, host of PBS Newshour, tweeted.

Thomas was also remembered fondly by those who faced her brash style of questioning in the White House briefing room.

?Rest in peace, Helen Thomas. First day I ever took the podium she came to encourage me,? tweeted Dana Perino, who served as press secretary to President George W. Bush.

She loved her job, and Thomas' colleagues said it showed in all of the 49 years she spent as a member of the White House press corps.

?I asked Helen Thomas about her life choices she said, 'I would still be a reporter. I consider that my greatest decision in life,'" tweeted CBS News White House correspondent Peter Maer.

Thomas career ended in 2010 when she abruptly retired after saying Israel should "get the hell out of Palestine."

?Helen Thomas died Saturday in D.C. Glass ceiling breaking journalist--1st female Gridiron member. Later controversial. Rest in Peace,? tweeted Chicago Sun-Times Washington bureau chief Lynn Sweet.

CEPEDA: College yes, but boot camp first

By ESTHER J. CEPEDA
CHICAGO -- For some young people, July is a month for getting in a few last weeks of relaxation before enrolling in college. For others, it?s also the lead-up to what could be one of the worst experiences of their lives.

The luckiest of this latter group are steeling themselves against all that could go wrong.

Here in Chicago, young men who got into college but are otherwise unprepared to navigate the environment of a university campus are attending a five-week first-year-of-college boot camp called ?The Wall.? It?s the brainchild of the Black Star Project, an organization that harnesses the power of parental and neighborhood involvement to drive academic excellence in the city?s black and Hispanic communities.

In their e-blast, the organization minces no words about how perilous college can be for young black and Hispanic men who have grown up on blood-spattered streets and graduate from college at far lower rates than white males:

?It is estimated that 67 percent of young black men who start college return home as dropouts in their first year of being on a college campus. Some families send colleges their honor students and get ex-felons in return. Young black men get caught up in the traps of freedom, women, drugs, sports, parties, fraternities, et cetera without guidance or support and they flunk out of college.?

Phillip Jackson, the executive director of the Black Star Project, told me that parents, in a last-ditch effort to protect their boys before they enter a world that is scary and unknown, drag their sons to the afternoon-long Saturday sessions. These parents have heard the horror stories of their neighbors? kids calling home from a college town?s jail three months after leaving home and want to avoid the nightmare.

?We?re telling them things that their parents don?t know or won?t tell them and that the dean at the school won?t tell them: ?This is how young black men get arrested on a college campus, this is how young black men get trapped by women who go to college to find a man, this is the environment of the small, rural town where your campus is located, where you?re going to have a target on your back,?? said Jackson.

He says that being away from home, being surrounded by an unfamiliar culture and starting out woefully academically underprepared for college-level work are the top contributors to the U.S. Department of Education?s scant estimates for six-year graduation rates among African-American males (34 percent) and Hispanic males (46 percent).

?Most wash out and come home thousands of dollars in debt within 12 months,? said Jackson.

?(Inner-city schools) don?t adequately prepare young people for college -- we have to come in and teach these kids organizational skills, study habits, success habits. For instance, we know that in the classroom young black men especially fail because they don?t ask questions. Well, you don?t ask questions on the streets of Chicago -- you get shot for asking questions. But now they?re in a classroom in Edwardsville, Ill., and they have to or they fail. They have to code switch from culture to culture, but no one?s ever told them that. So we tell them.?

?Then there?s this idea of studying and working in groups. You look at Asian students, they work together in large groups to study, prepare for tests, help each other and they make all the top grades,? Jackson said.

?But black students are lone rangers -- and at the bottom flunking out. We teach them how to work in groups, which they?ve never done. But if you don?t know how to work in groups, you?re never going to succeed in corporate America.?

Plenty of organizations have released reports on how institutions can improve college outcomes for black and Hispanic males, but I?ve never seen one that emphasized the mentoring aspect that the Black Star Project has keyed in on.

?We get young men who have themselves very recently graduated from college to teach these kids what to do and what not to do,? Jackson said. ?It?s almost like providing a Harriet Tubman -- a person who has gone to freedom but has come back to carry other slaves to freedom. This freedom is one of college graduation and we hope to create more graduates to start carrying others along this same path.?

WisdomTree: You Can't Afford Not to Save for Retirement | ETF Trends

In this installment of our Retirement 101 blog series, we?ll discuss how to afford saving for retirement even when times are tough.

When the economy goes south, people often forget about retirement planning or just stop doing it because they think they can?t afford it. But the truth is that you can?t afford not to save for retirement.

Costs only go up over time, and the longer you put off saving for retirement, the harder it will be. It?s never too late to start saving for retirement, but the earlier you start, the better off you will be. Remember that, while you can finance things like college, homes, weddings, etc., you cannot finance your retirement. You have to pay for it yourself. And regardless of how economically you live, Social Security will likely not be enough to cover your needs.

So how can you afford it right now?

You may be wondering how to afford it when you?re already struggling to make ends meet. But it may be easier than you think to make a small sacrifice now that can add up to a big difference later. For example, how much is that cup of coffee you grab every day? Maybe you think that saving that $1 a day won?t make a big difference over time, but it could. [WisdomTree: The Importance of Keeping Your 401(k) Invested]

One dollar per day is more than $300 per year, $3 per day adds up to nearly $1100 per year, and $5 per day is more than $1800 per year. Over time, that $300, $1100 or $1800 you invest can begin to compound and create a really significant difference in your retirement readiness. Plus, if you invest that money in a tax-deferred 401(k) plan, that $300 feels more like $225 to you. Even $1800 feels closer to $100 a month or $50 per pay period. Again, that small sacrifice now could make a big impact later.

Save early and often

As you can see, even that $1 per day can make a big difference over time. And if that?s all you can afford, it?s better than doing nothing. Once you determine how much you might be able to save, you should start saving right away. Consider that interest and earnings compound over time. For example, if you invest $100 and earn 5%, at the end of the year you?ll have $105. Then, even if you don?t invest any more, you begin to earn interest on the interest as well, so if you earn another 5% the following year, you?ll have $110.25. And so on and so on.

Consider ETFs

Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) may provide many benefits that make them attractive for retirement savings. But perhaps the most compelling are their low fees. Lower fees mean more of your investment is working for you. And just like that $1 per day can make a big difference over time, 1% lower fees per year can make a big difference as well, as we illustrated in previous blogs.

It?s never too early?or too late? to save, and every little bit helps, so get going. For more information on ETFs, 401(k) plans or other investment topics, please visit www.wisdomtree.com. In future installments, we?ll discuss ways to determine how much you need to retire?and much more.

Pearl Jam delivers for sold-out Budweiser Gardens in London

LONDON, Ont.?-?

For one night, London was undisputed champion of the rock ?n? roll world.

With U.S. superstars Pearl Jam and 9,700 intense, happy fans jamming Budweiser Gardens Tuesday night, there could not have been a better rock concert anywhere.

How good was it? How strong an experience?

?Shall we continue?? frontman Eddie Vedder asked innocently well into the night. Somewhere on the way to Chicago, PJ may still be continuing. Here?s a little of what happened over almost three majestic hours.

An epic cover of band ally Neil Young?s Rockin? in The Free World could have made a spectacular finale ? as it did here in 2005. So could an overwhelming Alive, or a rapid-fire Evolution, or a crowd-choir version of Daughter. All could have been worthy ends to Pearl Jam?s London visit.

Tuesday, there was even more.

The 30-song night closed with a quieter, but still intense, note and Indifference. Three classics more than 2? hours into a show that will be remembered as the year?s best and should be a contender as the venue?s best ever.

That was one acoustic-styled, tender moment on a night when Vedder, guitarists Mike McCready and Stone Gossard, bassist Jeff Ament, drummer Matt Cameron also thundered with Even Flow and other hits.

And how about their sweet cover of J.?Frank Wilson?s 1964 hit Last Kiss as the band turned to serenade hundreds of fans seated behind the stage. Not many bands can make that weeper and a Neil Young anthem work on the same night.

?You?ve been very good to us .?.?. thanks very much everybody,? Vedder said late in the night.

Before the first hour was up, the band had blitzed through its new single Mind Your Manners with such punkish fire, Vedder?s microphone malfunctioned for a moment or two.

Massive singalongs marked the early going after the opener, Present Tense. The huge fan choir was encouraged by the charismatic Vedder and pretty much carried the third song, Elderly Women Behind the Counter in a Small Town.

The band arrived at Budweiser Gardens last Friday and could be heard rocking the empty venue on the weekend.

Tuesday?s show is one of just two for Pearl Jam this summer. Friday, the band plays Chicago?s Wrigley Field. In the fall, there are more North American dates.

There has been speculation Pearl Jam chose the Bud for its lone Canadian stop because the band had fond memories of its 2005 concert at the then-John Labatt Centre.

?I?ve heard that they liked the venue,? arena general manager Brian Ohl said Tuesday as the concert ? much envied across North America ? rocked on.

The frontman also had a greeting for the fans, using a bit of The Clash?s London Calling before the band switched into its hit Corduroy.

Tuesday?s concert started about 30 minutes late, as thousands of fans lined up outside and waited to get to their seats.

Once the band hit the stage, it was non-stop electric uplift.

The concert?s energy and magic came from the band and its back-and-forth love with such fans as a Canadian sailor who?d come from Halifax for the show.

?Their music brings me home,? said Petty Officer First Class Scott Mason, who was on his feet the whole night.

So was everybody on a night when Pearl Jam and its fans truly reached the peak together.

US hedge funds put rival debt deal to Billabong

US hedge funds Centerbridge Partners and Oaktree Capital put a rival debt-for-equity swap deal to Billabong that sources claim was superior to yesterday's debt deal the embattled surfwear retailer struck with US private equity firm Altamont, according to The Australian.??

Representatives of the funds flew into Brisbane on Tuesday to offer a deal, only to be told the target had accepted a deal from Altamont, the newspaper said.?

They said the rival proposal would leave the company with $100 million of debt compared to more than $300m and be much less dilutive for Billabong shareholders,?

Billabong sources rejected the hedge funds' version of events, saying the proposal from the funds only came this morning, after they had seen last night's announcement by Billabong to the Australian Stock Exchange, The Australian reported.?

Google Eyes Online TV Service: Report

'WSJ' Says Internet Giant Looking to Acquire Rights to Stream TV Programming

In another sign of the increasingly competitive over-the-top video space, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google has been approaching programmers about acquiring rights to stream their channels and programming.

Reports of Google?s ambitions to launch a nationwide pay TV service have been rampant in the last few years.

These first surfaced as part of the launch of Google TVs by various CE manufacturers.

More recently, Google push to invest in original YouTube content and the Google Fiber rollouts have prompted regular reports that it was planning to launch a package of channels over broadband connections.

It isn?t clear however whether such a service could get enough content to be successful or acquire content at reduced prices that would attract new customers. Subscription fees currently account for about half of the $140 billion a year TV industry and programmers are understandably reluctant to jeopardize that income.

Such a launch could also put Google in direct competition with Apple, which has also been interested for some time in streaming traditional TV channels and Intel, which is preparing its own service.

Reports also circulated for several years about Sony?s plans to launch a package of channels over broadband connections.

AG strongly criticizes stand-your-ground laws

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? Attorney General Eric Holder on Tuesday strongly criticized stand-your-ground laws that allow a person who believes he is in danger to use deadly force in self-defense.

Holder said he was concerned about the case of Trayvon Martin, in which George Zimmermann was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges, and said the Justice Department has an open investigation into what happened.

But he added: "Separate and apart from the case that has drawn the nation's attention, it's time to question laws that senselessly expand the concept of self-defense and sow dangerous conflict in our neighborhoods."

In an address to an NAACP convention, Holder said it's time to question laws that "senselessly expand the concept of self-defense."

The attorney general said the country must take a hard look at laws that contribute to "more violence than they prevent."

Such laws "try to fix something that was never broken," he said.

Florida is among the states that have stand-your-ground laws, and the issue played a role in the prosecution of Zimmerman, whose acquittal has spurred calls for the U.S. Justice Department to file criminal civil rights charges against the former neighborhood watch volunteer.

Legal experts say a federal case would be a difficult challenge, with prosecutors having to prove that Zimmerman was motivated by racial animosity to kill Martin, who was 17 when he was shot during the fight with Zimmerman in February 2012.

On Monday, Holder had called the killing a "tragic, unnecessary shooting death" and urged the nation to speak honestly about complicated and emotionally charged issues.

On Tuesday, Holder seemed to be shifting away from the Martin case to one of those issues ? the debate over the stand-your-ground laws.

"There has always been a legal defense for using deadly force if ? and the 'if' is important ? no safe retreat is available," Holder told the NAACP.

"But we must examine laws that take this further by eliminating the common sense and age-old requirement that people who feel threatened have a duty to retreat, outside their home, if they can do so safely," he said.

In his comments referencing the Zimmerman case, Holder offered a story from his own personal experience ? describing how when he was a young black man his father had told him how to interact with the police, what to say and how to conduct himself if he was ever stopped or confronted in a way he thought was unwarranted.

"I'm sure my father felt certain ? at the time ? that my parents' generation would be the last that had to worry about such things for their children," Holder told the NAACP convention. "Trayvon's death last spring caused me to sit down to have a conversation with my own 15-year-old son, like my dad did with me. This was a father-son tradition I hoped would not need to be handed down."

Former senior policemen voice concern over need for EO to remove ...

http://din.huluselangor.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/tun-hanif-omar.jpg?

(The Star) -?The abolition of EO released hardcore criminals by the thousands into society in one stroke without adequate preparation on the ground by the police, other agencies and society in general.

While human rights issues were instrumental behind the abolition of the Emergency Ordinance (EO), the plight of the victims of these criminals is seemingly forgotten.

Former senior policemen who have dealt with these victims personally feel that there is a need for this preventive law to remove hardcore criminals off the streets faster.

According to former Inspector-General of Police Tun Hanif Omar, preventive laws were intelligence-based and not ?prosecution based?, which meant it got these criminals off the streets much faster.

?In a trial, the law favours the criminal nine to one, and shouldering the burden of proof is much harder against violent and organised criminals.

?Their victims and witnesses would not cooperate to testify in open court due to fear,? he told? The Star?recently.

Hanif said his first thought when the EO was abolished was that crimes, particularly violent ones, would escalate immediately.

?The abolition of EO released hardcore criminals by the thousands into society in one stroke without adequate preparation on the ground by the police, other agencies and society in general.

?We are talking about mostly hardened criminals who would naturally see the abolition and release as a victory, rather a reward for good behaviour,? said Hanif, who added that changes must also be made to the executive-appointed advisory board to make sure they are committed and competent to prevent any kind of abuse of the EO.

?This is important because the previous EO had degenerated into abuse due to incompetence, lack of dedication and allegations of widespread corruption,? said Hanif, who pointed out that it would be good for Malaysia to look at a comprehensive law like the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organisa?tions (Rico) Act in the United States.

?It would be ideal to have both the Rico Act and preventive laws until the police are sufficiently reformed and retrained to slowly rely less on such laws.?

Former Selangor police chief Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said he had personally seen what violent criminals were capable of in intimidating witnesses.

?When I was a policeman in Sarawak, these witnesses would come forward and cry to me and ask for help.

?I have seen some with their limbs cut off but what stuck was a victim who had his tongue cut off so that he would remain silent,? he said.?

Movie review: Monsters University

Perennial hit-makers Pixar (Up; Toy Story) revisit one of their most beloved films with this prequel to the 2001 hit Monsters, Inc.

Placing ever-so-slightly more emphasis on Mike Wazowski, the green ball with one eye voiced by Billy Crystal, this film charts his burning ambition to become a professional "scarer" by attending the titular tertiary institution. There, his fate gets mixed up with the big blue Sully (John Goodman), a gifted scarer who doesn't like Mike at all. When the pair's rivalry threatens to get both expelled, you can be sure lessons in teamwork will result.

The Pixar formula, involving well-defined characters, a clear plot directive and a lot of colour, remains successful, if a little stale. There's nothing particularly wrong with Monsters University but there are no real surprises.

Still, Pixar's light touch makes for a breezy watch, and the villain (a dean voiced by Helen Mirren) is impressively intimidating. Anyone holding out for a dazzling action finale along the lines of the first film's will be disappointed, but the youthful target market shouldn't have too many complaints
