Opting for a Partner or Going Solo ? What Agents ... - RealEstate.com

If you?re running your business intelligently, you?re bound to get to a point where you can no longer handle everything by yourself. At this point, most agents decide to delegate the administrative tasks and consider hiring an assistant to take them on. With an assistant to take over these tasks, the agent becomes more productive, generates additional business, and thus makes more money.

Some real estate agents prefer to work alone, but others benefit greatly from having a business partnerThat ?success builds on success? is never more apparent than in the trajectory of a real estate agent?s business when she is set free from the mundane.

Which is why, after a while, busy agents feel pressured to balance this increase in business with the very real needs of a personal life. An overwhelming amount of business means that vacations go by the wayside, weekends with the family no longer exist, and date nights with the significant other are a thing of the past. Eventually, the time will come to evaluate your priorities and consider bringing on more help.

Deciding on the Ultimate Alliance

Your choices are varied when you need help. Hiring a personal assistant is an option. Perhaps a buyer?s agent can relieve some of the pressure. The only consideration, however, when it comes to trying to balance professional and personal needs is that ultimate alliance ? a full-time partner.

?What a partner brings is quality of life improvement and stability of income, rather than an increase in income,? says real estate trainer and coach Kelle Sparta. ?You?ll have more transactions, but you end up splitting everything 50-50,? she continues, ?so your income doesn?t necessarily change, it just doesn?t fluctuate as much.?

Jennifer Allan-Hagedorn, real estate trainer and author of ?Sell with Soul,? says that ?vacation coverage is a prime benefit to having a partner.? ?It?s blissful actually, especially if you?ve been selling real estate a long time,? she explains. ?Your first vacation when you truly don?t have to worry about business? You?ll wonder why you didn?t get a partner before,? she concludes.

There is a fine line, however, between finding the partnership that offers relief from some of the pressures of a busy practice and one that does nothing but add stress.

What to Look for in a Business Partner

Before setting out to find a partner, it?s important to get clear on your expectations, according to Allan-Hagedorn. ?I promise you, bringing another warm body into your business world will not simplify your life ? it might improve it, but it definitely won?t simplify it,? she cautions in a blog post at ActiveRain.

She goes on to suggest that you look for someone who actually enjoys doing the tasks that you find distasteful. ?The best partnerships are those where the members of the partnership specialize in different areas,? she explains. ?If each partner has his or her individual responsibilities, directly linked to his or her skills and interests, the partnership has a great chance to thrive.?

Rule number one, according to Sparta, is to ?only partner with someone you trust. This person will be in charge of your income. If you think they are irresponsible or a slacker in any way, don?t partner with them.?

When St. Augustine, Florida agent Peggy Gatchet decided to make the move from management and part-time sales into full-time sales, she decided to take on a business partner. After a lot of deliberation, she decided that what was most important to her was finding someone who worked as hard as she did.

?The moral compass has to be strong, and the work ethic has to be strong,? she explains. ?You have to feel like that person is going to meet you toe-to-toe, hour-to-hour, minute-to-minute. If they don?t, there?s going to be some resentment that will build,? Gatchet cautions.

While most of the agents we spoke with agree that the person you partner up with should have a different skill set than you, they also agree that your partner should have similar personal and work habits.

Having to share space with someone who is very disorganized, for instance, when clutter and chaos drive you nuts, is probably the kiss of death for the partnership. In fact, Sparta suggests that you check out the potential partner?s desk before even approaching him or her with an offer.

?Take a look at their desk because one day you will have to find something on it,? she jokes.

In a nutshell, then, here are some qualities to look for in a business partner:

  • Someone who enjoys doing the tasks you find distasteful.
  • An agent who is trustworthy and honest.
  • Someone with your same work ethic and moral compass.
  • A person with a production level that matches yours.

All Good Things

There?s an old radio DJ dictum: It?s OK to ad-lib when you open the mic, but ?always know how you?re going to get out of it.? There?s nothing worse than to be talking over the intro of a song and suddenly figure out you don?t know how to end your rap.

Taking on a business partner is similar. Like all things, the partnership may someday end. While it?s difficult to consider this, especially in the beginning, it?s something both of you need to face and prepare for. Get real clear on how you?re going to end.

?You don?t want to think about it; you don?t want to talk about it, but that doesn?t change the fact that the partnership will end,? Allan-Hagedorn says. Not preparing for it in advance leaves your business open to some major disruption. As an example, she offers a frightening one-sentence summation of something that occurred when she and her former real estate partner parted ways. ?We both felt that we were entitled to the partnership?s client database.? Can you imagine?

Sparta recommends drawing up a formal partnership agreement at the start. ?A partnership agreement is like a prenuptial agreement,? she explains. A good partnership agreement should set expectations about fundamental issues such as:

  • Who will do what and how much of it they will do.
  • How compensation will be shared ? in both regular instances and in unusual instances like referral fees and lawsuit settlements.
  • What happens to the business if someone is incapacitated, retires or dies?
  • How the partnership will be dissolved in the event that things don?t work out.

?In the latter instance,? Sparta warns, ?make sure you address not only who will get the current clients and listings, but also who gets the ownership of the past client database and any training, tools, equipment, and materials that were jointly purchased.?

Sparta is now a real estate trainer and coach but looks back fondly on her partnering days. ?Having been a solo practitioner and having been part of a team, I really must confess to preferring the latter. I loved not having to do things alone. I loved having someone I could call and say ?I?m not going to make it for the appraiser, can you meet him??

Allan-Hagedorn, on the other hand, prefers flying solo. ?I am not a good partner. I am happy to be the boss and to take all the responsibility; I am also happy to be told what to do and have no responsibility. However, I am not happy sharing the power and the responsibility. Actually, I suck at it,? she confesses.

Gatchet, on the other hand, has no intention of ever trading her business partner for the solo practitioner role. Partners for seven years now, she chose her partner from among her rookie agents when she was a broker. Sort of a build-the-perfect-partner model, it has worked out perfectly for both of them.

Not every agent will fit well in a partnership. If your entire life has become about your business, however, it just might be something to consider.

The Best Experimental Chrome Features You Should Check Out

Google Chrome is a great browser as it is, but that doesn't mean it doesn't come with its share of annoyances and curiosities. You can fix some of these, as well as add new features by playing around with Chrome's experimental settings. Here are a few we really like.

When you type chrome://flags into your URL bar in Chrome, you get all kinds of crazy options for experimental features. Some of these can fix problems with Chrome, others do absolutely nothing, and others might wreak havoc on your system, so use them with caution. With that in mind, here are a few we've tested and love, although your mileage may vary.

Generate Passwords

If you're not using a password manager like LastPass (and you really should be) then you probably find yourself just reusing the same password over and over. That's no good for security, and while you're better off with a password manager, if you're holding out, you can generate new passwords right in Chrome. Just head to the Flags page, and enable, "Enable password generation." Now when you go to a new signup page, you'll see a small key icon. Click that, and Chrome will automatically make a password for you that's synced across all your versions of Chrome.

Tab Overview with a Gesture

Mac only: If you're a Mac user on a laptop you know the trials of having way too many tabs open. They line up across the top of the browser and suddenly you can't tell which tab is which. If you enable the experimental feature, "Tab Overview Mac," you can get a quick look at all the tabs you have open by holding down Option and swiping down with three fingers. It's incredibly handy.

Tab Stacking

Windows only: If you're on Windows and have a tab problem, Chrome has you covered there as well. When you enable "Tab Stacking" your tabs automatically start stacking on top of each other instead of just side-by-side when you have a ton open. As Ghacks points out, it's a feature that's been in Opera for a while. Tab stacking still needs a little work on Chrome, but it's better than nothing.

Speed Up Chrome's Performance

Whether Chrome is running slow or you simply want it to run faster, you have a few different options that can help boost performance. Enabling any of these can cause some problems with different video cards, so if you run into problems you might need to turn them off. Head into the flags page and enable these settings:

  • GPU compositing on all pages: This option should speed up Chrome across the board by giving your GPU more stuff to do. We've had mixed luck with this one, so use at your own risk.
  • Threaded compositing: As cool as the name sounds, you'll probably only get smoother scrolling when a page is loading with this enabled. Still, that's helpful enough for those slow-loading pages.
  • GPU Accelerated SVG Filters: This might speed up graphics-heavy sites that have a lot of effects like shaders going on.

Those are the only ones that will speed up performance without significantly changing how web pages look. Other options, like "Disable accelerated 2D canvas," might speed up performance but it might have a negative effect on how pages are displayed.

Make Browsing On Touch Screen Computers Bearable

Chrome's not made for touch screen computers, and that means that browsing on something like a Microsoft Surface is next to impossible. Thankfully, our own Melanie Pinola tested out a few of the experimental features and recommends enabling the following flags: "Touch Optimized UI," "Enable Touch Events," and "Enable Touch Initiated Drag and Drop." Combined, those should make it possible to use Chrome on your Windows touch device without giving you a headache.

Keep an Eye On What Your Extensions Are Doing

Chrome extensions want access to all kinds of data, and if you're uncomfortable with that you might want to peek under the hood and see what they're doing. When you turn on "Enable extension activity UI" a new option is added to the Extensions tab in your Settings. When you click "Activity," Chrome starts logging what the extension is doing so you can get a look at it and make sure it's not doing anything you don't want. It's a little hard to read, but you can at least decipher a little bit of what it's up to.

Fix Annoyances

The other thing that Chrome's Flags do is fix common annoyances. Occasionally, Chrome adds a new feature that makes things work differently, or that starts shooting out annoying notifications. The first place to check is the flags to see if you can disable it, but here are a few that fix common annoyances:

  • Revert to the Old "New Tab" Page: Just find "Enable Instant Extended API" and set it to "disabled." This should bring back the old "new tab" page with history and "recently closed" at the forefront.
  • Turn Off Chrome Notification in Windows: If the way Chrome's notification icon sticks around after you close it is annoying you then turning it off is pretty simple. Just find "Enable Rich Notifications" and set it to disabled. That should keep the notifications from popping up when you're not actually running Chrome.
  • Smooth Scrolling: If you're not getting smooth scrolling on Windows or Linux, turning this feature on should get smooth scrolling working properly.

These are just a few we've tested and enjoyed. For the most part, you can fiddle around with the Chrome flags to your hearts content. Just make a note of what you're enabling (or disabling) so you can fix it in the future. Not every setting is going to work for everyone, and a few that sounded great, like "Enable desktop guest mode" and "Full History Sync" didn't work for us at all, but you might be able to get them running.

Kerry: NATO needs plan for Syrian chemical weapons

BRUSSELS (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry urged NATO on Tuesday to prepare for the possible use of chemical weapons by Syria on the same day that a senior Israeli military intelligence official said Syrian President Bashar Assad had used such weapons last month in his battle against insurgents.

It was the first time Israel had accused the embattled Syrian leader of using his stockpile of nonconventional weapons.

The assessment, based on visual evidence, could raise pressure on the U.S. and other Western countries to intervene in Syria. Britain and France recently announced that they had evidence that Assad's government had used chemical weapons.

President Barack Obama has warned that the use of chemical weapons by Assad would be a "game changer" and has hinted that it could draw intervention.

But White House spokesman Jay Carney said while the administration is continuing to monitor and investigate whether the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons, it has "not come to the conclusion that there has been that use."

"But it is something that is of great concern to us, to our partners, and obviously unacceptable as the president made clear," Carney said.

Despite the deteriorating situation, NATO officials say there is virtually no chance the alliance will intervene in the civil war. More than 70,000 people have died in the conflict, according to the United Nations. The violence also has forced more than 1 million Syrians to seek safety abroad, and more are leaving by the day, burdening neighboring countries such as Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq.

On Tuesday, Brig. Gen. Itai Brun, the head of research and analysis in Israeli military intelligence, told a security conference in Tel Aviv that Assad had used chemical weapons multiple times. Among the incidents were attacks documented by the French and British near Damascus last month.

He cited images of people hurt, but gave no indication he had other evidence, such as soil samples, typically used to verify chemical weapons use.

"To the best of our professional understanding, the regime used lethal chemical weapons against the militants in a series of incidents over the past months, including the relatively famous incident of March 19," Brun said. "Shrunken pupils, foaming at the mouth and other signs indicate, in our view, that lethal chemical weapons were used."

He said sarin, a lethal nerve agent, was probably used. He also said the Syrian regime was using less lethal chemical weapons. And he appeared to lament the lack of response by the international community.

"The fact that chemical weapons were used without an appropriate response is a very disturbing development because it could signal that such a thing is legitimate," he said.

Israel, which borders Syria, has been warily watching the Syrian civil war since fighting erupted there in March 2011. Although Assad is a bitter enemy, Israel has been careful not to take sides, partly because the Assad family has kept the border with Israel quiet for 40 years and partly because of fears of what might happen if he were toppled.

Israeli officials are concerned that Assad's stockpile of chemical weapons and other advanced arms could reach the hands of his ally, the Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon, or Islamic extremist groups trying to oust him from Syria.

Kerry, attending his first meeting of NATO's governing body, the North Atlantic Council, as America's top diplomat, said contingency plans should be put in place to guard against the threat of a chemical strike. Turkey, a member of the military alliance, borders Syria and would be most at risk from such an attack. NATO has already deployed Patriot missile batteries in Turkey.

"Planning regarding Syria, such as what (NATO) has already done, is an appropriate undertaking for the alliance," Kerry told NATO foreign ministers. "We should also carefully and collectively consider how NATO is prepared to respond to protect its members from a Syrian threat, including any potential chemical weapons threat."

Speaking at a news conference after the meeting, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the alliance is "extremely concerned about the use of ballistic missiles in Syria and the possible use of chemical weapons." However, he also noted that NATO has not been asked to intervene.

"There is no call for NATO to play a role, but if these challenges remain unaddressed they could directly affect our own security," he told reporters. "So we will continue to remain extremely vigilant."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in Brussels to talk with his counterparts from NATO countries, said Russia would want any investigation of whether chemical weapons have been used to be conducted by experts and concern only the specific report being investigated.

Speaking through a translator in a press conference at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Lavrov said that, in March, after each side in Syria's civil war accused the other of using chemical weapons in northern Aleppo province, the U.N. investigation became politicized and overly broad. Instead of sending experts to study the specific area and the specific allegation, Lavrov said investigators demanded access to all facilities in the country and the right to interview all Syrian citizens.

In Washington, Pentagon spokesman George Little said the U.S. "continues to assess reports of chemical weapons use in Syria."

"The use of such weapons would be entirely unacceptable," he added.

Later in the day, Kerry appeared to try to soften his earlier remarks, saying he had no way of knowing what the facts were.

"I didn't ask for additional planning," he said. "I think it might have been the secretary general or somebody who commented that we may need to do some additional planning. But there is no specific request. What there was from me was a very clear statement about the threat of chemical weapons and the potential for chemical weapons generically to fall into bad hands."

He also said the Obama administration is "looking at every option that could possibly end the violence and usher in a political transition" and that plans need to be made now to ensure that there is no power vacuum when that takes place. He said increasing aid to the Syrian National Coalition and its military command, the Supreme Military Council, would be critical to that effort.

Many of NATO's 28 members also belong to the European Union, which on Monday lifted its oil embargo on Syria to provide more economic support to the rebels and is now considering easing an arms embargo on the country to allow weapons transfers to those fighting the Assad regime.

Kerry did not mention the possible easing of the EU embargo but he did say that NATO should begin to think about taking on a larger role in planning for a post-Assad Syria, particularly in dealing with the country's chemical weapons stockpiles.

The NATO ministers were also working Tuesday on defining how the alliance would support Afghan forces after 2014, when NATO will no longer have a combat role.

With next year's transition date looming, Kerry will host three-way talks in Brussels on Wednesday with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and top Pakistani officials aimed at speeding possible reconciliation talks with the Taliban and improving trust and cooperation between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

On the sidelines of the NATO meeting, Kerry met Lavrov to discuss a range of issues, including Syria. He also thanked Lavrov for Russian President Vladimir Putin's statement of condolence to the U.S. for last week's bombings at the Boston Marathon blamed on two ethnic Chechen brothers.

ECB says ditching austerity would not help euro zone

By Martin Santa and Sakari Suoninen

BRUSSELS/FRANKFURT (Reuters) - ECB policymakers rebuffed suggestions that Europe should ease up on austerity and said that while the central bank has room to cut interest rates, such a move would not necessarily help the economy much.

European Central Bank Vice-President Vitor Constancio said that seeking to stimulate economies by stopping measures aimed at cutting government debt could merely increase countries' borrowing costs rather than triggering growth.

Finance leaders of the G20 economies last Friday edged away from a long-running drive toward cutting spending and raising taxes in rich nations, rejecting the idea of setting hard targets for reducing national debt in a sign of concern about a sluggish global recovery.

With budget cuts blamed for a second straight year of recession in the euro zone, the EU's top economics official Olli Rehn indicated over the weekend that more flexibility on tough economic targets was needed.

His boss, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, said on Monday that austerity had reached its natural limits of popular support.

Recent surveys and data have pointed to economic weakness spreading to the euro zone core, and on Wednesday Germany's Ifo sentiment indicator came in weaker than the most pessimistic of forecasts as poor exports undermined Europe's largest economy.

"We certainly still have some margin of maneuver to take decisions, and as (ECB) President Draghi said in the latest press conference, we stand ready to act if economic conditions continue to provide bad news, as has unfortunately been the case," Constancio told the European Parliament in response to a question.

But ECB policymakers did not accept that weaker growth was a reason to change course on reform, insisting that more balanced budgets were essential to revive sustainable growth.

"Economic adjustment, both internal and external, has been significant, has implied high costs in terms of unemployment and should not (be) put into risk of unraveling now," Constancio told the European Parliament.

Joerg Asmussen, who sits on the ECB's Executive Board, also spoke of a risk of slipping back and warned against taking the current market calm for granted.

"(A) sound fiscal condition is really a precondition for growth," he told the Financial Times. "If one postpones fiscal consolidation to a later day, that comes not without risks."

ECB Governing Council member Ardo Hansson said EU states must push economic reforms further, strengthen public finances and avoid complacency.

German Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann had a stern message for France, the euro zone's second major economy, which is slipping already this year from commitments to cut its budget deficit.

Lessons should be drawn from earlier breaches of debt limits, Weidmann said. "France especially has an important role to serve as an example for credibility of the rules and trust in the sustainability of public budgets."

PFT: Several teams in top 12 look to move down

BermanGetty Images

With the draft approaching, the now-annual debate has emerged regarding whether the networks that broadcast the proceedings ? ESPN and NFL Network ? should avoid tipping picks.

It?s a philosophical question that both networks should resolve by asking this simple question:? What does the audience want?

Last year, a poll on PFT revealed that more than 78 percent of the 11,500 who responded don?t want the picks to be tipped.? We?re starting that same poll from scratch below, in order to get a fresh reading.

The challenge for the networks comes from the unique nature of the draft.? While on one hand ESPN and NFLN have hired a small army of news gatherers, the draft represents pro football?s equivalent of the Oscars.? And for the same reasons that audience doesn?t want George Stephanopoulous scurrying around trying to find out what it written inside the envelopes, the NFL draft audience doesn?t want to know whose name is one the card in the hands of the Commissioner until the Commissioner announces its contents from the stage at Radio City Music Hall.

The wishes of the audience apply both to reporting picks and predicting them.? While ESPN producer Seth Markman continues to insist that the advance information regarding the identity of each pick that makes its way to the production truck isn?t shared with the on-air talent, anyone who has worked in live television knows that good producers want to give their on-air talent the best possible information so that the on-air talent can be prepared to say intelligent things.? So if Markman is a good producer (and we assume he is), Markman presses his ?all call? button and lets the guys at the desk know who they will be talking about.

And then Chris Berman often feels compelled to create the false impression with the audience that he is clairvoyant.

Even if Berman somehow is merely guessing, he guesses right often enough to undermine the audience experience.? Which is what this all comes back to.? Networks that care about the audience give the audience what the audience wants.? Networks that care only about the network give the audience what the network thinks the audience should want.

When it comes to the first round of the draft, the audience doesn?t want to know who the pick will be, via a tip or a guess or a camera placed in the player?s home, before the Commissioner announces it.? The sooner ESPN and NFLN figure that out and act accordingly, the more enjoyable the draft will be for those watching it on television.

Girding for a federal budget battle royale, parties wrangle over rules

With Capitol Hill bracing for a battle over financial policy this summer, the focus now is on rules for the committee that will seek to reconcile House and Senate versions of the federal budget.

By David Grant,?Staff Writer / April 23, 2013

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) of Nevada talks to reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, April 23, 2013. Senator Reid asked for unanimous consent to appoint Senate negotiators for a budget conference with the House, which House Speaker John Boehner (R) of Ohio called 'stunt.'

The House and Senate are creeping toward the summer?s battle royale over debt, deficits, the 2014 fiscal year federal budget, and the nation?s borrowing limit ? a swarm of financial topics that will hit Capitol Hill before lawmakers break for the traditional August recess.

But right now, the leaders of both parties are trying to reach a deal on the rules for the committee that will attempt to reconcile the deeply conservative budget passed by the House GOP and the equally liberal measure offered by Senate Democrats last month.

The first steps of this drama played out in the Senate on Wednesday.

In a move clearly aimed both at shining a spotlight on the issue of the budget and tweaking the GOP in the process, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) of Nevada asked for unanimous consent to appoint Senate negotiators for a budget conference with the House.

Republicans have been the most prominent champions of so-called regular order requiring both chambers to pass budgets and subsequently agree on a compromise through negotiation. The Republican House was even the originator earlier this year of an idea that required both chambers of Congress to pass budgets or forego their pay until the end of the congressional session.

So it may appear slightly hypocritical at first blush that Republicans objected to Senator Reid?s request.

Republicans said the Nevadan?s move was little more than a ?stunt,? in the words of a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner (R) of Ohio. The GOP still wants a budget, lawmakers in both houses said Tuesday ? they just want to clarify what the rules of the negotiating road will be before they start the process of hammering out differences between the deeply divergent visions for the nation?s finances.

Appreciation of a Media Man With a Passion for Diversity - Higher ...

by Reginald Stuart

?

Al Neuharth

Former media executive Al Neuharth gave his top staffing aides a clear mandate, authority and the money needed to turn his diversity talk into action.

When South Dakota native Allen Neuharth got his chance to pursue his passion of being a news executive, he did so on a national scale as a trailblazer?reinventing news and newsrooms in the 1970s and 1980s with a relentless zeal and madness to his method that today still leaves many people amazed.

While making money was for sure at the center of his agenda as head of Gannett Co. Inc., Neuharth aggressively promoted his broad agenda as a nontraditional media mogul, forcing his rivals and peers to think outside the box or risk being consumed by his generosity with the company?s money he used to acquire dozens of small and mid-size papers and promote affirmative action and racial and gender diversity.

Neuharth succeeded in forcing many of his rivals and peers to reinvent their newspapers with shorter stories (500 word maximum, with few exceptions), more charts, graphs, color, snappier headlines and diversity of voices. His ideas for reinventing local papers went national when he debuted USA TODAY, the capstone of his media empire and its unusual news stand boxes shaped like a small television set in contrast to most local papers.

As he was empire building and moving to reinvent the news, Neuharth embraced and exerted a passion for affirmative action and diversity in the news business that had been widely talked about since the civil rights marches of the 1960s and late decade riots in major cities, yet timidly acted upon in a big way.

In just under a decade, Neuharth had bought many of the major dailies in the South that promoted and defended racial segregation and ridded those publications of an approach to news that ignored or demeaned racial minorities. He did the same when it came to women, opening access to top jobs that in the past were rarely thought of.

He gave his top staffing aides a clear mandate, authority and the money needed to turn his talk into action. Soon, people of many ethnic and racial backgrounds?men and women?were working in the newsrooms of Gannett-owned papers and television stations, oft times stunning peers, local, state and national leaders.

Neuharth died last week at his home in Florida at the age of 89.

?He was a game changer and not afraid to mix it up,? said Don Hudson, executive editor of the Decatur (Ala.) Daily and an admirer of Neuharth since the former Gannett chief visited Hudson?s college to explain to Hudson and his fellow students in a business class why USA TODAY was a good business idea.

Hudson, who later became part of Neuharth?s legacy when he (Hudson) was named managing editor of the Jackson Clarion-Ledger in Mississippi, is one of a series of people of color and women who can trace their ascendency in the once all-White newsrooms of America to Neuharth?s work as a ?game changer.?

At one point, after Neuharth had marched through the South buying politically liberal newspapers like the Louisville (Ky.) Courier Journal and The Nashville Tennessean to staunch conservative publications like The Nashville Banner and Jackson Clarion, the papers at one point or another had Black men or women as editor, managing editor or publisher. Gannett has since lost most of its Black newsroom leadership, with the Black publisher of the Montgomery Advertiser leaving his post earlier this month.

While there are still complaints about the newspapers? coverage, it is far less about outright racially biased reporting and more often about the papers? being unwilling to take a firm stand on many occasions, a reference to Gannett?s approach to using editorial pages more as issue-and-debate and forum pages and less as vehicles to solely express a particular paper?s point of view.

Neuharth raised eyebrows in the 1990s when he appointed rising news executive Kathy Black as publisher of USA TODAY. Appearing at a dinner in Washington, D.C., to receive an award, Neuharth used the appearance to respond to his critics. He told the dinner banquet audience that he had heard some critics say she was the wrong choice, that she was not qualified for the job. ?She may not be qualified,? Neuharth said, ?but, she?s ready for the challenge.? It was such comments along the way in his career that left no doubt in people?s minds Neuharth saw the world differently.

After retiring from Gannett in the late 1980s along with Gannett business partner John Quinn, considered the conscience of the Gannett team lead by Neuharth, the two kept their diversity ideas intact when they launched the Freedom Forum, a Washington, D.C., center that promotes free speech and free press values.

The Freedom Forum, which operates the increasingly popular Newseum, launched a newsroom internship program in 1991 in honor of Quinn?s late son, Chips. The Chips Quinn program has since helped fund more than 1,300 internships for college students with journalistic aspirations, mostly students of color.

At the same time, Neuharth made sure he never forgot his roots and the press access issues facing Native Americans in South Dakota and the rest of what is widely called Indian Country. For some 20 years, until this spring, the Freedom Forum generously funded journalism camps for Native Americans of high school age and a journalism institute for Native Americans of college age.

?He really wanted to make an impact and he did,? said Karen Lincoln Michel, executive editor of The Daily Advertiser, the Gannett daily paper in Lafayette, La., and former national president of the Native American Journalists Association. ?It seems to me he understood the importance of diversity.?

NFL Draft '13: When will Te'o be selected?

NEW YORK (AP) ? When it comes to the NFL draft, getting tricked into an online relationship with a girl that didn't exist ended up being the least of Manti Te'o's problems.

That stinker of a game he played against Alabama? Now that's an issue. Same goes for that less than blazing 40-yard dash he ran at the combine.

Considering all the news involving Te'o since the calendar flipped to 2013, it seems like forever since he was leading Notre Dame to the national title game, playing linebacker like an All-American and cleaning up on the college football awards circuit.

Combine the good, bad and bizarre, and when Te'o gets selected might be the most intriguing part of the NFL draft that starts Thursday in New York.

"There's no doubt he'll be one of the story lines of the night," said former NFL player personnel executive Phil Savage, who works as the executive director of the Senior Bowl.

It's unlikely that Te'o, who turned down a chance to attend the draft, will be off the board during the first 15 or so picks, but come the back-half of the first round, expect plenty of Te'o talk.

Te'o figured to be a highly scrutinized player heading into this draft even before he became a tabloid news and daytime talk show fixation.

The 6-foot-1, 240-pound middle linebacker was the unquestioned leader of a Notre Dame defense that ranked among the best in the country and propelled the Fighting Irish to an undefeated regular season.

Te'o led the team in tackles and made seven interceptions, more than any linebacker in the country. He finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting behind Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel, and took home a trophy case-full of other awards.

At his best, Te'o was being touted by some draft prognosticators as a high first-round pick.

Then Notre Dame played Alabama for the national championship.

The Crimson Tide crushed the Irish 42-14 in South Florida and Te'o looked overwhelmed facing Alabama's array of future NFL draft picks along the line and in the backfield.

You could practically hear Te'o tumbling down draft boards with every missed tackle.

"No question he played poorly against Alabama," NFL draft consultant and former Dallas Cowboys general manager Gil Brandt said.

Then things got weird. It was revealed that Te'o's girlfriend, who supposedly died during the season, never existed. He had been the victim of an elaborate hoax. Catfished.

Aside from being publicly humiliated, the episode called into question Te'o's character, which until then had seemed exemplary. It was another hit to his draft stock.

The final blow came at the combine, where Te'o ran the 40-yard dash in 4.82 seconds, making him one of the slowest linebackers there. He did better at Notre Dame's pro day about a month later, but the damage was done.

Te'o had seemingly gone from surefire first-rounder to maybe a second-round pick. Or at least that's the way it might have looked to those who follow the around-the-clock draft coverage on the Internet and TV these days.

Not so for Brandt, who has Te'o rated as the 20th-best player available.

"I wish he was just a little faster," Brandt said. Though his scouting report of Te'o also includes, "plays faster than his times."

Te'o's lack of straight-line speed could be a problem in man-to-man coverage, but both Brandt and Savage agree Te'o has shown good enough instincts to hold up well in zone coverage. As long he isn't limited to playing only running downs, Te'o can warrant a first-round selection.

"I think in some respects he's going to end up being drafted in the range that would have been expected regardless of what had transpired after the regular season," said Savage, who was general manager of the Browns from 2005-08 and also worked with the Ravens and Eagles.

"The vast majority of player personnel people saw him as a good player, but not as a great player."

Savage compared Te'o to D'Qwell Jackson of the Browns and DeMeco Ryans of the Eagles. Both were drafted early in the second round.

"(Te'o) did not have the explosive burst and hitting ability that you saw in Ray Lewis, Jon Beason, Jonathan Vilma or Luke Keuchly," Savage said.

Keuchly was taken ninth overall last season by Carolina and went on to become the defensive rookie of the year.

As far as character questions related to the fake girlfriend hoax, Brandt said that issue was put to rest when Te'o answered dozens of questions from reporters at the combine.

Brandt said he spent time with Te'o at the combine and came away impressed.

"I thought he was a very bright guy, quality individual. Everything about him I thought was upscale," Brandt said.

Savage said he didn't get a chance to meet Te'o, who turned down an invite to the Senior Bowl, but heard that his interviews with team officials at the combine went well ? and that teams did plenty of digging into his background.

Bears GM Phil Emery told the Chicago Tribune: "I found Manti to be a very good person, a very squared-away guy."

Savage figures there will be an initial media "circus" for whatever team drafts Te'o, and that team needs a plan to deal with it. Some teams might not feel it's worth the hassle, but ultimately the decision on whether to draft Te'o won't be much different from any other prospect.

"The majority of teams have evaluated him," Savage said, "and if he is the next best player on their board when it's their pick, they'll take him."

Indian "24" will work like slow poison: Anil Kapoor

By Shilpa Jamkhandikar

MUMBAI (Reuters) - He's starred in several Bollywood blockbusters, an Oscar-winning film and played a Middle Eastern leader on the American TV series "24".

Anil Kapoor is now wooing Indian audiences with an adaptation of the hit thriller series about a counter-terrorism agent.

Kapoor, the remake's producer and lead actor, says he wanted to bring the "discipline and professionalism" of U.S. television to India.

The 53-year-old spoke to Reuters on the sets of his new show, describing his experience with the U.S. series and how "24" will hook Indian audiences like slow poison.

Q: When you did the original "24" in the U.S., how different was the experience?

A: When I went to the shoot, I was totally taken aback by the scale. My only experience of an international film at that time was "Slumdog Millionaire" which we shot in India. Now I was shooting in America ? It was much bigger than "Slumdog" - vanity vans and cars and the whole paraphernalia. It was huge. I went inside and saw the set. That day it was the U.N. set and I noticed the detailing. It was an exact replica. Exact. The detailing and everything was perfect.

I couldn't put the script down. We are not used to reading scripts (in India), we are used to narration. But I just had to finish reading this script. I thought this is like shooting a big commercial film. Everybody was well-prepared and completely immersed in the work culture. The way we shot it, the two camera set-up, the way it was. Slowly, I got completely sucked into it and started enjoying the whole process.

Q: Indian TV audiences are used to very different fare. Do you think you've taken a big risk?

A: Whatever I have done in my career - you like something, you go for it ? You stick your neck out and I have stuck my neck out. I am not playing it safe, I am playing the lead. And I'm a movie star.

Q: When you conceptualized the show, was (director) Abhinay Deo part of the plan?

A: The written material was already there, but I needed to get an international scale and feel. Then I happened to see "Delhi Belly". When I saw the performances, the pitch of the film, I said this is it. He is the director. When I met him, it turned out he was equally passionate about "24".

Q: What does it take to make an international-level TV show in India?

A: The first is the scale and the budget. Everything is about money today. I can't tell you about the budget but I can say that we are trying our best to have the same scale. That was the major thing, the biggest hurdle to cross. Convincing the channels that this is what it is.

Q: In that sense, it is an experiment. Isn't it?

A: It's not an experiment, it's a challenge. What happens is, even if the first season is good enough, that will be enough. Then the second season will come with a bang. Even in America, the first season was OK-OK. It was only after the second and third season, (it) took off. Television slowly gets into you like a poison ? They will realize that this will work like slow poison. It'll suck people into it.

Q: Do you have to add drama for the benefit of Indian audiences who aren't used to subtlety?

A: "Sholay" is a great example. The pitch is mainstream but real. You enjoy it. We are aiming for that kind of pitch and that's what I understand. The one thing Abhinay wants is for youngsters to watch television from "24". Somewhere, the footfalls in the theatres have increased and (TV) shows which were earlier successful aren't any more. There is a stagnancy. That's why they are going to theatres to watch these niche films. There are lesser sources of entertainment. The timing is very right.

Q: What if this doesn't work?

A: My wife says your body of work is so much, that it doesn't matter. You can move on. I am doing it when I am peaking. I am saying no to feature films. Big film-makers. Bigger stars than me have said yes to those roles. It doesn't work, it doesn't work. You move on.

Q: What would be the measure of success for you?

A: For me, it's already a success. That it's happening. I am already on seventh heaven. I have already celebrated.

95% Gimme The Loot

All Critics (40) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (38) | Rotten (2)

A thousand-watt jolt of mischief, a spunky, funky, ebullient indie that packs its 81 minutes with cinematic exhilaration.

It may be a slight movie, but it has its sunny charms.

A movie about teenage taggers in the Bronx should be fast and raw, scruffy and loose, and Adam Leon's Gimme the Loot is just that.

As it lopes along, the movie offers a warm but very sharp portrait of New York's have-nots and their uneasy relationship with the haves.

"Gimme the Loot" shouldn't be as appealing and exuberant as it is, it really shouldn't.

Tashiana Washington and Ty Hickson are terrific in the main roles. So is Zo? Lescaze as Ginnie, a spoiled white kid who teaches the taggers a thing or two about drift and being dissolute.

Simultaneously real and hopeful, "Loot" has almost no plot, but when the setting is so fresh and the characters feel so raw and alive, who needs one?

Ghetto laughs with a sophisticated point of view.

...a magical, summery treat.

Promotes robbery and can't be serious in expecting us to care whether Malcolm and Sofia become more than friends.

The winner of the Indie Spirit 'One to Watch' award could never work again and will always have a memorable New York City film to his credit.

An impressive debut feature, Gimme the Loot is also an unusual take on characters who want to leave their stamp on "the city that never sleeps."

Much more grownup than it looks, Gimme the Loot is that rare teen-centric film whose brisk pace is unburdened by sentimentality.

Writer-director Adam Leon has crafted a classic New York story, a film imbued with the fast rhythms and muggy sensations of city life during the summer.

Suspect on Twitter after Boston bombing: 'Stay safe' - U.S. News

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

Two hours after the Boston Marathon bombing, suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev tweeted, ?Ain't no love in the heart of the city, stay safe people? ? and a day later said he was ?stress-free.?

The Twitter account (handle: @J_tsar), which borrowed heavily from song lyrics by the likes of Eminem and Jay-Z, ?has not been active since Wednesday, when Tsarnaev?retweeted a post by a Muslim scholar: ?Attitude can take away your beauty no matter how good looking you are or it could enhance your beauty, making you adorable.?

Tsarnaev?s Twitter feed is full of typical teenage banter, pop culture quotes and jokes, but the tweets he made in the days before and after the bombing are now being parsed for extra meaning.

His ?stay safe? tweet -- which drew from the Jay-Z song title "Heart of the City (Ain't No Love)" -- came at 5:34 p.m. on Monday. A few hours later, he followed up with: ?There are people that know the truth but stay silent & there are people that speak the truth but we don't hear them cuz they're the minority.?

On Monday and Tuesday he replied to tweets from other accounts that were protected, so it was unclear what was being discussed.

But Tsarnaev?did make one direct reference to the marathon tragedy, replying to a tweet of a widely-circulated photo that showed a bombing victim on the ground, her boyfriend crouched over her.

?Fake story? he wrote, without further comment.

In another Tuesday tweet, he used the lyrics of the Eminem rap "Forgot About Dre" to complain: ?Nowadays everybody wanna talk like they got somethin to say but nothin comes out when they move their lips; just a bunch of gibberish?

A few hours later came this declaration: ?I'm a stress free kind of guy.?

The final post came on Wednesday, when he retweeted Mufti Ismail Menk, who describes himself a Muslim scholar who studied in Saudi Arabia but who appeared to be based in Zimbabwe.

Obama Dines With Senate Democrats

ABC News' Betsy Klein reports:

After a tough day following the failed gun control vote in the Senate, President Obama met 12 Democratic senators for dinner a few blocks away from the White House at Washington's Jefferson Hotel.

RELATED: President Obama, GOP Senators Break Bread

The group discussed the economy, gun control and the Boston Marathon bombings for two hours. Obama told the senators he would continue to fight to reduce gun violence, following today's failed background check proposal, which was defeated 54 to 46 in the Senate. The president also said he had confidence in the FBI-led investigation of the Boston Marathon.

Senators Michael Bennet of Colorado, Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, and Mark Warner of Virginia were spotted enjoying beverages on an outdoor patio following the meal. When asked about the meeting, Whitehouse gave reporters the "thumbs-up," saying, "Two thumbs up, very well."

Asked to elaborate further, Bennet added, "We talked about not talking about it."

The White House has also held dinners with Republicans in recent months, part of an effort to expand communications with lawmakers.

Canon PowerShot Elph 330 HS

The Canon PowerShot Elph 330 HS ($229.99 direct) is one of the best compact cameras that you can buy for under $250. It's easy for anyone to use, has a generous 10x zoom range, and allows you to share photos via built-in Wi-Fi. Most importantly, the images it captures are sharp and the 12-megapixel CMOS sensor lets you shoot at ISO 1600 without introducing too much noise into photos. It's not perfect?the 1080p video frame rate is locked at 24fps, you'll need to record in 720p to capture footage at the more common 30fps. But aside from that, there's not much bad to say. It earns our Editors' Choice award for mid-price compact cameras, ousting the aging Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX150 from its perch.

Design and Features
The Elph 330 HS is part of Canon's midrange line of compact cameras. It's got a sleeker look than the budget A series, with an all-metal exterior and curved lines that make it comfortable to hold. Available in black, pink, or silver, the Elph 330 HS measures just 2.2 by 3.8 by 0.9 inches and weighs a mere 5.1 ounces, so it's easy to slide into a shirt pocket. It's a bit smaller than the 4.8-ounce 10x-zoom Panasonic Lumix DMC-SZ7.

The lens is a 10x zoom design, covering a 24-240mm field of view with a variable aperture that starts at f/3 and closes down to f/6.9 when zoomed all the way in. The Samsung DV150F has a lens that opens up to f/2.5 at its widest angle, but doesn't do as well at higher ISO settings and its lens dwindles to f/6.3 when zoomed all the way in. These conspire to negate the roughly 50 percent advantage that f/2.5 enjoys over f/3.0 in terms of light-gathering capability.

loading...

?

The 3-inch rear LCD is reasonably sharp thanks to a 461k-dot resolution, but it isn't the best we've seen on a compact camera. The Nikon Coolpix P310 packs roughly twice as many pixels. That camera is a bit more expensive, and has a wider aperture lens, but a shorter zoom range. The Elph's display is plenty bright, so you should feel confident using it outdoors. It's viewable from almost any angle, which will help when shooting photos from an off-kilter point of view.

There aren't a ton of control buttons squeezed into the Elph's small frame, but you get what you need to make quick adjustments; more knowledgeable shutterbugs will find themselves turned off by the lack of full manual, Shutter Priority, and Aperture Priority modes. You can shoot in Canon's Hybrid Automatic mode, which takes most of the control out of your hands. You'll be able to set the self-timer and decide whether the flash is on or set to automatic mode, but that's it.

Switching to program shooting via a toggle switch gives you a bit more control. When in this mode the rear control button that adjusts EV Compensation, which lets you easily make your photos appear brighter or darker, works. Also coming alive is the flash control?you can now force it to fire, or set it to fire properly when using slower shutter speeds?and manual control over macro focusing. Other shooting controls are accessible via an overlay menu, activated by the Function/Set button. These include the metering pattern, ISO setting, white balance, continuous drive mode, and image aspect ratio. In addition to Program, there are a number of scene modes?ranging from old standards like Snow and Fireworks to more artistic filters like Toy Camera, Miniature Effect, and Smooth Skin. There's no dedicated mode for sports; to get the fastest shutter speed possible to capture action you'll want to boost the ISO as high as you feel comfortable and shoot in Program mode.

Canon's Wi-Fi implementation here isn't as simple to configure or as full-featured as you see on Samsung cameras like the WB250F or the Android-powered Galaxy Camera. Those models let you to post photos to social networks right out of the box, and even control the zoom and shutter via your smartphone. Canon doesn't go that far. First, you'll have to configure Web services like Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook through Canon's Image Gateway software. This requires you to plug the Elph into your PC or Mac via the included USB cable. It's a pretty painless process, thankfully. You can pair the camera with your smartphone or tablet via a peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connection to transfer photos. If you leave the Camera Window app running while you shoot you can enable location logging, which will add GPS data to photos upon transfer. The app is free for Android and iOS devices.

You can also transfer photos directly to your computer. Some shooters may use this to download images, but we still recommend using an SD card reader. It's quicker and won't drain your camera's battery. You can send photos directly to or from another Canon camera with Wi-Fi, and you can send a photo directly to a compatible wireless printer. The former doesn't seem like a use case that would be all that common; the latter, well, you're printing without cropping or performing any retouching?it seems like you'd want to take more care before using the paper and ink.

Performance and ConclusionsCanon PowerShot Elph 330 HS : Benchmark Tests
The Elph 330 HS starts and grabs a photo in just about 1.8 seconds. Shutter lag is an impressive 0.15-second, and it fires off shots at 2 frames per second. It's not the absolute fastest compact that we've tested, but it's no slouch. The Sony WX150 is a bit speedier?it starts and shoots in 1.4 seconds, has an almost nonexistent shutter lag, and and can fire off a 10-shot burst at about 6.7 frames per second, but will make you wait about 8 seconds before you can shoot another photo after the burst is captured.

I used Imatest to check the sharpness of the Elph's lens. A score of 1,800 lines per picture height, calculated using a center-weighted average, is required for a photo to be considered sharp. The 330 HS scores 2,069 lines, an impressive result for a compact. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-SZ7 only scored 1,563 lines on the same test.

Imatest also checks for noise, which can really hurt image quality when the camera's sensitivity to light, measured in ISO, is increased. The Elph keeps noise under 1.5 percent through ISO 1600, a good result for a camera with a small image sensor. Close examination of photos shot at ISO 1600 show that there's a very good amount of detail, although some very fine textures are not captured. Images show 1.9 percent noise at ISO 3200, and some details start to disappear, but the camera is still very useable at that setting?especially if photos are destined for web sharing. Compare this to the Samsung DV150F; it keeps noise below 1.5 percent through ISO 800, but excessive noise reduction kills image quality at ISO 400 and above. You'll always want to shoot the Elph 330 HS at the lowest ISO you can manage and still get a sharp, in-focus shot, but don't hesitate to push it to ISO 1600 when the lighting calls for it. You can go as high as ISO 3200 in a pinch, but you'll likely want to avoid ISO 6400 as images are noisy and detail is lacking.

Video is recorded in QuickTime format in 1080p24 or 720p30 quality. The footage looks very good, but the 24fps frame rate is a little slow for capturing fast action. It's often used in Hollywood films, and using it in your home movies can give them a cinematic look, but you'll want a faster frame rate if smoother motion capture is what you crave. You can reduce the resolution to 720p to hit 30 frames per second, but some cameras, like the rugged Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS can shoot at 1080p60.

You can zoom in or out when recording, but the sound of the lens moving is quite audible on the soundtrack. Autofocus during video is quick, quiet, and accurate. There's a mini HDMI, so you can connect the camera directly to an HDTV, as well as a mini USB port to plug it into a computer. Standard SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards are supported, and a rechargeable battery is included. Canon still includes a plug-in wall charger, while many other recent compact models require you to charge the battery in the camera itself. A second battery is always a good idea, especially during vacations, and having an external charger on hand makes it possible to recharge a spent battery while shooting with your spare.

The Canon PowerShot Elph 330 HS is a compact camera with a standard 1/2.3-inch image sensor, so don't expect it to compete with a D-SLR in terms of image quality. But when you compare it with its peers, it's an excellent performer. The lens packs a 10x zoom range, and it's sharp. The image quality holds up through ISO 1600, the camera is a speedy performer, and Wi-Fi makes it easy to share photos online. The video mode is a bit disappointing, and a wider aperture lens would go a long way to letting you use lower ISO settings in dim light. But despite these flaws, the Elph 330 HS is worthy of our Editors' Choice award for midrange compact cameras. It's an excellent value at its asking price, and to get a significantly better camera you'll need to spend quite a bit more.
