House Siding
Few home improvements or repairs can improve the appearance, curb appeal and value of your house like new house siding. House siding materials have varied over the years and have included:

  • wood siding,
  • asbestos siding,
  • aluminum siding,
  • vinyl siding,
  • hardboard composite,
  • fiberglass,
  • cement fiber siding.

Asbestos, fiberglass and hardboard composite siding have been largely replaced with more modern siding such as vinyl and cement fiber siding.

Here?s an overview of wood, aluminum, vinyl and cement fiber as possible alternative siding choices. Take a moment review each of them including their features, pricing and maintenance implications.?

?

Wood Plank and Beveled Wood Siding
Wood-clapboard is among the oldest types of siding ever used. Its beauty is often seen on older and historic homes. Its? primary disadvantage is high maintenance, requiring periodic painting and caulking. ?Wood siding is commonly replaced with aluminum or vinyl siding. Unfortunately when that happens, a lot of the charm and detail of the wood home is lost.

Aesthetics

  • Availability of styles textures and finishes is good.
  • Wood clapboard or beveled siding is horizontal with overlapping joints.
  • Wood plank or board siding is vertical and comes in board and batten, board on board or channel-groove or tongue and groove styles.
  • Board siding also comes in a plywood version often called T-111? which is just exterior plywood with different face treatments and groove patterns to emulate a traditional board and batten design.

Characteristics

  • Fairly easy to repair but difficult to install over existing siding.
  • Requires an exterior finish such as paint or stain.
  • Can be damaged by rot, insects, warping or splitting.

Cost

  • Cost varies widely by type of wood species and style of siding and exterior finish.
  • T-111 is least expensive.
  • Generally moderate in price.

Maintenance

  • Painted finishes tend to require higher maintenance and require good exterior house painting preparation.
  • Wood siding is prone to paint problems if the home is not properly ventilated.
  • Stained finishes usually require lower maintenance.

Aluminum Siding
The intensive nature of wood sidings has brought about the desire for alternative options. Aluminum siding, by-and-large, has been the answer. Aluminum has evolved over the years into a very low maintenance and popular siding choice for newer homes.

Available in strips, aluminum siding has perforated holes at the top for securing to the exterior wall and interlocking flanges top and bottom to mitigate against the elements.

Aesthetics

  • Comes in a broad range of styles including horizontal or vertical panels and prefinished colors.
  • Available in a variety of textures including wood shake and/or shingle style.

Characteristics

  • Common retrofit siding and has often, unfortunately, been applied over wood siding in many home ?improvement? projects where maintenance won out over aesthetics or the wood siding was severely damaged.
  • Durable material but prefinished painted finishes have been known to fade, chalk and runoff onto brick walls often below the siding.
  • Now available in vinyl coated finishes, alleviating past paint problems.
  • May easily dent and lends itself to being noisy.
  • Lacks the ability to be trim-detailed.

Cost

  • Non-coated aluminum is generally moderate in price.
  • Vinyl or plastic coated aluminum is expensive.

Maintenance

  • Low maintenance.
  • Up to 35 year warranty available on plastic or vinyl clad aluminum
  • Pre-painted aluminum siding can be prone to chalking.
  • Denting repair is a common repair issue with aluminum siding.

Vinyl Siding
With the advent of vinyl siding came the low cost-low maintenance solution to aluminum.

Vinyl siding, like aluminum siding, is available in strips and has perforated holes at the top for securing to the exterior and interlocking flanges top and bottom to mitigate the elements. A zip tool is used to join and separate the siding strips.

Aesthetics

  • Available in horizontal and vertical panels and a range of prefinished colors. Some of them can be pretty wild.
  • A variety of textures, including wood shake and shingle style, are available.

Characteristics

  • Commonly used to retrofit siding; often applied over wood siding in many home ?improvement? projects.
  • Can crack in cold weather when subjected to impact.
  • Improper installation of siding may cause it to warp or buckle.

Cost

  • Tends to be less than aluminum siding.

Maintenance

  • Very low; never needs to be painted as color is throughout the vinyl siding.
  • When cracked, replacement of whole section is required.

Cement Fiber Siding
The latest development in residential siding is cement fiber. Its durability, low maintenance and being made of post-consumer materials (known as ?Green?) set it apart from the rest.

Some of the major manufacturers of this product include:

Aesthetics

  • Emulates a natural wood grain and is virtually indistinguishable from some wood siding products.
  • ?Like-wood? trim and millwork pieces are available to provide design detail for the home.
  • Available in; beveled siding, shingle/shake and stucco panel styles.

Characteristics

  • Incredibly durable.
  • Installs similar to wood siding.
  • Cuts same as wood siding.
  • Available in primed or pre-finished.
  • Impervious to rot and insect damage.

Cost

Maintenance

  • Occasional rinsing, otherwise virtually maintenance free.
  • Warranty of 50 years is common from the major manufacturers (Cemplank only 25 years).
