Careers in I.T. your advice please. - Jobs, Business, Banking ...

I own a software development company in the states that focuses on creating business, marketing and social apps. Been doing it for over 14 years.?

First, you can broadly describe the I.T. space as?divided?into two hemispheres that can sometimes be at odds with each other ? Those Who Make vs. Those Who Maintain. My experience and perspective falls squarely in the Those Who Make category.

?

First off, what you can do in I.T. is broad. So i'd think about what you are good at and enjoy. Do you like people? Maybe look into UX design. That's?becoming?more popular as companies understand it's worth and it's a lot of fun not requiring development skills. Do you think you can code? *Good* iOS and Android developers are in demand. Ruby on Rails developers are also hot commodities. Are you a math genius? People who can come up with formulas for unique search?algorithms or predictive shopping models are making shit cans of money. They come up with simple formulas I could of made in high-school, leverage the power of the cloud and take credit for it. Good HTML 5 developers are in high high high demand with good ones going for $80-$120k in the states.

?

On the Those Who Maintain side, I'm not as dial-in with that crowd. That's a world of certifications and corporate?lackeydom I have a lot of distaste for. Good Linux sysadmins tend to do well. Also, folks who can combine expertise in one area with another do well - so if you have a previous career consider melding that with your I.T. future. For example, you were a nurse - combine nursing with IT - and focus on I.T. for health care. The same could apply for construction, banking, etc. it specializes you and ups your earn potential.??

?

In both cases work yourself into a management/consulting role as quick as possible. Even if you hate it, it's the fastest way to elevate your wage potential.
